When we think of wellbeing it might make us think of our health, how we are feeling, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">but one thing is for sure if we want to be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a productive independent woman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> it\u2019s imperative to be aware of it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Darling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The word wellbeing is derived from the same narrative of mental health. There is an acceptance that mental health is no longer just the absence of mental illness. It is also a myth that if we have a mental health diagnosis that every day is going to be a bad wellbeing day. We can have any diagnosis and have good days and bad days aside from our illness. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Understanding the triggers that push us towards those bad days is also another way of ensuring <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">self-growth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The below continuum from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mhfaengland.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> aims to illustrate this:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2861 size-us_768_0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.selfishdarling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maximum-mental-wellbeingfitness-1-768x477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hormona.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maximum-mental-wellbeingfitness-1-768x477.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hormona.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maximum-mental-wellbeingfitness-1-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hormona.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maximum-mental-wellbeingfitness-1.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> if we accept mental health and wellbeing is a part of every human being, just like physical health, it\u2019d be useful to know how to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">enhance it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to be our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">most excellent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> selves. If we have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">on-point<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">wellbeing,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> we are more likely to not overspill our stress bucket when say, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ex<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> turns out to be a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sociopath.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Similar to Brexit the government&#8217;s conversation surrounding mental health has been slow, confusing and cost <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lots<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of cash with nothing much to show for it. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Therefore,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> it is no surprise that it was only eleven years ago that the UK Government bravely decided that it was about time to give us a message on how to look after our basic mental health. This being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notlostbutfree.com\/post\/what-the-f-k-is-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Five Ways to Wellbeing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, this message was aimed to mirror <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> much better known physical health counterpart The Five a Day (which is now Ten btw &#8211; IKR).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2865 size-us_768_0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.selfishdarling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-1-1-768x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hormona.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-1-1-768x472.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.hormona.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-1-1-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hormona.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-1-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Five Ways to Wellbeing (New Economics Foundation, 2008<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">(this has now been expanded to 10 points by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionforhappiness.org\/10-keys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/www.actionforhappiness.org\/10-keys<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> but we\u2019ll keep it a bit less cheesy).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Five Ways to Wellbeing Broken Down:<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Connect: <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Go get deep with another human. Surprisingly we are designed to be around others, loneliness is one of the biggest killers. When we are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sociable,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> we trigger oxytocin (happy hormone) production in the brain.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Keep Learning: <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Try something new, burlesque dancing, a course on the evolution of humpback whales, how to achieve the perfect o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rigami turtle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Whatever it is, using the brain stops you from losing it and learning gives a sense of purpose.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Being Active: <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Unfortunately,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2018they\u2019 keep telling me that activity is good for the brain. The good news is this is any type of movement not necessarily that swear word \u2018exercise\u2019. In fact, activity is proven to increase serotonin, another happy hormone, a chemical that is actually <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">manipulated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in anti-depressant medication. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">However,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> it is important to find your activity, be that wild swimming, tree climbing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> or maybe just doing a spot of Marie Kondo around the house<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Giving: <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now this doesn\u2019t have to be of monetary value &#8211; although prosocial spending is shown to benefit us. Giving of any kind to another, particularly those we have a connection with improves <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">life-satisfaction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">self-realisation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and physical health. This is something I\u2019ve been trying to practice on the tube in London recently through the gift of a smile. Needless to say, I\u2019ve received looks that could kill back.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Taking Notice: <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Going back to an earlier blog post, Taking Notice borrows its principles from mindfulness and meditation. Taking notice is about being observant of your current environment, being in the moment and avoiding distractions like Instagram.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now if you really want to get into this a great way to start is by looking at how much of the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">above,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> you&#8217;re currently doing. The aim of this is to un-fill your stress bucket through good coping strategies. Rather than say hours on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">social media<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> washed down with a bottle of Rioja<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Darling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (don\u2019t panic it is ok occasionally).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We know quick fixes make us feel good, but for a limited time. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> after you\u2019ve considered how much of the above you do, look at how you can build more in, even though it may be more time-consuming. For example, going out and \u2018connecting\u2019 can seem a pain in the ass, but how many times have we gotten home and thought \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u2019m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> so glad I went\u2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If it all feels a bit overwhelming why not set yourself a small goal by using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notlostbutfree.com\/post\/the-beauty-of-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SMART goal principles (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It might sound ridiculous, but even <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">penciling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in a diary entry to look up local life drawing classes is a goal achieved.
